The problem is usually not with the finger itself, but with one of the technologies that makes up the computer interface. Touch screen displays require that the user actually use his or her actual finger to move the cursor, rather than just using a stylus. As any computer user will know, when you press a key on a keyboard the computer registers that as a motion, and then a touch screen displays the result. It is the equivalent of trying to type on a chalkboard – the more you push the brush, the more there is movement. The same principle applies when you are using a finger trackpad – if you can’t actually feel that way you are pointing, then the trackpad is not really doing what you want it to.

For example, some optical finger trackers require you to place your finger in certain positions on the track, and then your finger tracks the motion of the pointer on the screen. So, if you are typing on a computer and need to move your finger in certain ways, you can end up with painful finger cramps. This is because the computer screen is actually moving at the same speed as your finger!

Another common problem that people have when using finger tracking technology is called ‘clickitus’. This is when the screen clicks unexpectedly when you are typing or moving your finger around on the screen. This can be very frustrating, and you may even find yourself moving your finger away from the keyboard as a result of clicking. In many cases you may not even realize that you are clicking – until you try to type some text and you realize that your finger isn’t actually on the keys.

So, as you can see, there are some big problems when using finger tracking on a computer. However, there are also some very simple solutions. You can get a pen and paper and start writing on it! It is by no means a replacement for a proper typing device, but it will help if you are struggling with certain problems.
